Due to the special working environment of metallurgical cranes, such as high temperatures, heavy loads, and frequent lifting, steel core wire ropes are generally selected. The main reasons are as follows:
High strength and wear resistance
Steel cores (such as independent wire rope core, IWRC) are made of high-quality steel wires, featuring higher breaking strength and compressive resistance, making them suitable for heavy loads and impact loads in metallurgical scenarios. In contrast, fiber cores (such as sisal or jute cores) in steel wire ropes have less elasticity and are prone to wear, thus they are mostly used in light lifting equipment.
High-temperature adaptability
Metallurgical operations are often accompanied by high temperatures. The metal materials of steel core wire ropes are more resistant to high temperatures, while the hemp core is prone to aging or burning at high temperatures, posing safety hazards.
Service Life and Maintenance Requirements
Steel core wire ropes have a longer fatigue life, especially when combined with manganese-based phosphating coating technology, which significantly enhances their wear resistance and corrosion resistance, with a lifespan that can be 3 to 4 times that of smooth wire ropes. However, it should be noted that steel cores have poorer flexibility, and larger diameter sheaves or drums should be used to reduce the risk of wire breakage.
Exceptional cases: If the metallurgical crane is used in a light-load or low-temperature environment, a hemp core may be chosen to reduce costs, but the working conditions must be strictly evaluated.
Suggestion: When actually selecting, parameters such as lifting capacity, temperature, and usage frequency should be taken into account, and enhanced products like phosphated coating steel wire rope or galvanized steel wire rope should be referred to for optimizing performance.
