The differences between bridge cranes and gantry cranes
1. Structural differences
Bridge crane: Its two ends are located on tall concrete columns or metal supports, resembling a bridge. The bridge frame runs longitudinally along the tracks laid on the elevated sides, making full use of the space below the bridge frame to lift materials without being hindered by ground equipment.
Gantry crane: Its metal structure is like a door-shaped frame, with two legs installed under the main beam, which can directly travel on the tracks on the ground. The ends of the main beam can have cantilever beams extending outward.
2. Application scenarios
Bridge cranes: Mainly used in indoor environments such as workshops and warehouses, they can also operate in open-air settings. They are suitable for places that require crossing large working areas, such as docks and factories.
Gantry cranes are mainly used for loading and unloading bulk cargo in outdoor storage yards and material yards. They feature high site utilization, large working range, wide adaptability and strong versatility, and are widely used in port storage yards.
3. Functional Features
Bridge Crane: It lacks a slewing and luffing mechanism, but the hook can move back and forth along the trolley as prescribed. It usually has an adjustable lifting height, which can meet the needs of handling and stacking goods of different heights.
Gantry crane: It is equipped with a rotating and luffing mechanism, allowing it to rotate 360 degrees during operation. This makes it more flexible and adaptable in loading and unloading operations. The standard configuration includes a trolley and a frequency conversion device for the trolley, ensuring smooth operation and rapid positioning of the crane.
4. Other differences
Bridge crane: It is generally divided into single-girder and double-girder types. Single-girder cranes are usually used for weights under 10 tons and have a smaller span; double-girder cranes can carry weights over 10 tons, and some large cranes can reach hundreds of tons in lifting capacity, with a larger span as well.
Gantry cranes: Their design complexity surpasses that of bridge cranes, with the core difference being their unique leg design. Additionally, gantry cranes come in a wide variety of models, including lattice type, box type, and the distinction between single and double main beams, and are equipped with various types of legs such as L-shaped, C-shaped, and A-shaped.
